Ketamine Infusions Q & A

What are ketamine infusions?

Ketamine infusions are a medical treatment the team at Ketamine Therapeutics offers to help those suffering from severe mental health conditions that haven’t improved with traditional treatments. Ketamine Therapeutics is the only office in northeast Florida and southeast Georgia offering ketamine infusion therapy.

Ketamine has been used as an anesthetic for surgery since the 1960s. More recently, researchers found that ketamine infusion helps treat those suffering from severe depression.

While researchers are still investigating the mechanisms behind how ketamine works, it’s theorized that the medication repairs the synapses altered by your mental health condition. This makes them more receptive to the chemicals in your brain that control mood, known as neurotransmitters.

What conditions benefit from ketamine infusions?

The team at Ketamine Therapeutics uses ketamine infusion therapy as a treatment for many mental health conditions. The practice may recommend ketamine infusions to those suffering from:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Alcohol use disorder

Using ketamine infusions for many of these conditions is still considered experimental. The team at Ketamine Therapeutics conducts comprehensive examinations when you come in for a consultation to determine if ketamine infusion is the best treatment for you.

While ketamine seems to offer many benefits, due to the experimental nature of the medicine, you may need to try other treatments before the team recommends the breakthrough therapy.

No matter what you need, the team at Ketamine Therapeutics provides the care necessary to help you get relief from your mental health symptoms.

What can I expect during ketamine infusion therapy?

Ketamine infusion therapy is an outpatient procedure conducted at the office. During your treatment, you sit in a comfortable chair.

An intravenous (IV) line is inserted in your arm and connected to a syringe attached to a medicine pump that’s programmed to supply the recommended dose of ketamine. The team closely monitors you using state-of-the-art equipment throughout the entire infusion.

Your treatment time varies depending on the recommended dose but usually doesn’t take more than an hour. The effects of the infusion wear off fairly quickly, but the team continues to monitor you for up to 30 minutes after the completion of your infusion.

Due to the potential for side effects, the team recommends you arrange to have someone drive you home after your infusion, and refrain from driving or using any heavy equipment for up to 24 hours.

You should notice an improvement in your symptoms soon after your infusion, usually within a few hours.
